Kenyans in Lowell mourn pastor, long suffering parishioner dead one week apart

Description :
A shocked Kenyan community in Lowell near Boston gathered Saturday and Sunday at the St. Stephen's church in Lowell near Boston to mourn the deaths of a long time assistant pastor, Rev. Leonard Ngarama (80) and a parishioner, Nancy Givens (56), both who just passed away recently in a span of one week.

According to close sources, the late Rev. Ngarama passed away in his house at Mwimuto in Kiambu County Sunday May 8, barely 6 months after he relocated back to Kenya following a church dispute that left him sidelined from his clergyman duties. He left behind a wife, several children, and many grand children.
About 40 Kenyans gathered at the St. Stephens church on Saturday for memorial service to honor the late pastor in a ceremony led by Rev. Josephat Kamau , the new pastor of the church and Canon Peter Gachathi, retired pastor of the St. Paul's Kenyan Community church in Lawrence.

An Anglican church of Kenya ordained pastor, the late pastor Ngarama had served the St. Stephen's church as an assistant pastor for close to ten years since immigrating to the US around the year 2000. About $2,000 was raised towards the bereaved family by the handful of parishioners and other mourners gathered. Pastor Josephat Kamau, together with master of ceremonies, Thuo karugu thanked Kenyans who attended.

Several clergymen, among them former St. Stephens church pastor, Samuel Kimohu, Rev. Dr. Joseph Kimatu,Rev. Njuguna Ngotho and Rev. Gathogo attended the memorial.

24 hours later, several hundred Kenyans streamed back to the same church to mourn the death of the late Givens, a long time member of the church who resided in Nashua NH passed away Friday May 3 from colon cancer. Speaking to Ajabu Media, close sources said that the late mother of three been struggling with the deadly cancer for 3 years since late 2016.

Her husband had also suffered a stroke in 2013 that left him paralyzed until his death in 2015. Due to the severe difficulties the family had gone through, members of the Kenyan community in Lowell and New Hampshire had been supporting the late Givens with finances, companionship and other support through each hardship.
During the memorial service on Sunday, her now orphaned daughter sat quietly between friends and other close relatives as different Kenyan churches, welfare groups and individuals rose to the occasion to raise $25,000 towards funeral expenses.
Among them was the Dynamic Women group of Lowell who has been alternating shifts to care for the late Kenyan mother as her condition deteriorated and unable to work any longer. The Dynamic women together with the St. Stephens church organized another fundraiser earlier in the year where about $35,000 was raised towards living expenses for the struggling family.

Funeral Update: Conrad's Father is here, Please come out and Support the Mzee

Description :
The funeral arrangements for Conrad Natse, the 36-year-old Kenyan recently found dead on his bed in Brookline, Mass., have made significant progress. His father, Mzee Hesbon Natse, will land in Boston tomorrow, April 26, 2019, at 1:00 p.m. via British Airways from Kenya.

Alex Inyagwa, the chair of the funeral committee, is making passionate appeals to the Kenyan community in Greater Boston to come out in great numbers for the fundraiser slated for this Saturday, April 27th.

"It is a crying shame that we are still short of the funds needed to lay our brother to rest!" implored Alex. "But even more importantly is to give the Mzee moral support at this most trying time for the family."

Conrad's mother, Jane Ijaya Makani, had fervently hoped to accompany her husband, but the U.S. embassy in Nairobi did not grant her a visa. Conrad's friends and relatives are therefore urging all Greater Boston Kenyans to come out to show their solidarity with the Mzee.

"Even if you bring only 20 dollars," emphasized Alex, "it will go a long way to show our brothers and sisters here, who are so far from home, that we Kenyans stand together when one of us is in need. If we get about 100 people there, and each contributes only 20 bucks, that will be a good two thousand, enough to offset the air ticket for our beloved Mzee!"

Alex's impassioned plea echoed the recent study by Rev. Dr. Joseph Kimatu, which showed how devastating death far away from home is.

"I am calling to all our pastors in the Kenyan Diaspora community to use this rare opportunity to actualize the recommendations in Dr. Kimatu's book!" Alex said.

For those unable to attend in person, concluded Alex, they can send their donation via CashApp, or with a friend who manages to come.

The April 27 fundraiser is scheduled to last between 4:30 and 6:00 p.m., for only an hour and a half!

Kenyan pastor in Boston loses daughter while on family vacation in the motherland

Description :
LOWELL, MA__Tragedy struck the family of Rev. Charles Kihiko of the Calvary Evangelical church in Dracut near Boston when his only daughter collapsed and died while on a vacation to Kenya on Tuesday night.

Grace Wairimu Kihiko (29) had just retired to bed in the upstairs bedroom at the family's motherland home in Dagoretti Market near Nairobi, when she suddenly collapsed and became unresponsive, family sources told Ajabu Media.

Efforts to perform CPR on her did not succeed. She was then rushed to the nearby Kikuyu Mission Hospital where she was pronounced dead. Family sources added that the late Wairimu had underlying medical conditions which may have resulted in the unexpected death.

"My dad had gone for vacation to Kenya with my sister when they got stuck there when flights were cancelled due to the Coronavirus Pandemic. They were just waiting for travel to resume so they could come back to Boston and join the rest of the family when this tragedy happened," said Timothy Kihiko, the eldest son among the 3 siblings in the family.

"We are very shocked," he added, saying it is a difficult time for his mother, Jane Kihiko, and younger brother, Njuguna Kihiko, all of Lowell, MA after receiving the sad news from their distraught dad over the phone.

Due to social distancing measures put in place by authorities both in the United States and in Kenya, the family has set up an online WhatsApp group and prayer line for funeral arrangements and co-ordination of donations.

Friends and well-wishers are requested to join the family for prayers every day from 7pm by dialing:(978) 419-9763.

Donations towards funeral expenses can be sent to Jane Kihiko via CashApp #:(978) 601-5955.

"It is not yet clear when and where the funeral will take place due to the current global pandemic, but consultations are ongoing," said the younger Kihiko.

May the late Wairimu Rest in Peace.

'We will not mourn Queen Elizabeth': Colonial past divides opinion on legacy

Description :
While leaders from every corner of the globe have briefly united in mourning and celebrating the long life of service of Queen Elizabeth II, some reactions have been divided about the legacy of the monarch.

For many in England's former colonial territories in Africa, India and the Caribbean, the queen’s death has revived memories of a bloody past while evoking the monarchy’s role in the slave trade.

For instance, hours after the announcement that Queen Elizabeth II had died, the South African opposition party, the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), broke rank with most of the world by declaring that it would not be among those mourning the British royal. The party, led by activist Julius Malema, said it would instead use her passing to highlight what it termed as her contribution to a tragic period in South Africa, a former British colony, and Africa’s colonial history.

The South African party added that the monarchy serves as a reminder of a very tragic period in the history of Africa.

“Elizabeth Windsor, during her lifetime, never acknowledged the crimes that Britain and her family in particular perpetrated across the world. In fact, she was a proud flag bearer of the atrocities because during her reign. When the people of Yemen rose to protest British colonialism, Elizabeth ordered a brutal suppression of that uprising,” the party said in a statement.

Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema. PHOTO | AFP

The Red Berets, as the party's members are commonly known, said South Africa’s interaction with Britain under the leadership of the British royal family has been one of pain, suffering, death, depression and dehumanisation for black people.

“She willingly benefitted from the wealth that was attained from the exploitation and murder of millions of people across the world. The British Royal Family stands on the shoulders of millions of slaves who were shipped away from the continent to serve the interests of racist white capital accumulation, at the centre of which lies the British royal family,” it added.

The British monarch died on Thursday at her residence in Balmoral, Scotland.

Her eldest son Charles, 73, immediately became king upon her death, as well as the symbolic head of the UK and 14 other realms, including Australia, Canada and New Zealand.

Divergent opinions

But while Britain begins to observe 10 days of mourning in honour of the queen, opinion is still split, especially on social media, over what her legacy should be in its former colonial territories.

For instance, a Carnegie Mellon University associate professor who expressed disdain for the monarch came under fire from some Twitter users, while others expressed support for her views.

Her initial tweet was criticised by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and has since been taken down by Twitter for violating the platform's policies.

Prof Uju Anya, who is of Nigerian descent, doubled down on her views, and her employer has since distanced itself from them.

Still, some social media have been critical of the coverage of her death.
