WELLS, Maine --A Kenyan man from Lowell near Boston driving a box truck was involved in a fatal turnpike crash Friday afternoon when he struck the rear of a car and then landed on top of it, state police said in a press release.

Two people, including a 5-year-old boy, died after John Kamau, 56, of Lowell, struck the rear of their car on the Maine Turnpike in Wells, state police said.

The two who died were Earl Gray, 57, of Waterboro, Maine, and Wyatt Frost, 5, of Lyman, Maine. Gray was a volunteer driver with York County Community Action, and had provided transportation to the boy for a couple of years.

The crash took place around 2:30 p.m. as traffic was slowing down because of an unrelated second crash in the southbound lane; an erratic driver had struck guardrails, and was thrown out of the car onto the pavement.

Kamau was delivering mail from New Hampshire to Portland, Maine. The impact also drove Gray's car into the rear of a tractor trailer ahead of it. Both truck drivers were slightly injured, but did not require hospitalization.

There was an eight-mile backup after the crash. Normal traffic resumed just after 7 p.m.

Troopers said the crash report when completed will be forwarded to the York County District Attorney's Office for review.
