The bodies of 112 victims of the Garissa University College terrorist attack have been identified by their relatives at Nairobi’s Chiromo Mortuary.

Health Cabinet Secretary James Macharia said 30 bodies were yet to be identified, adding that this had delayed release of the final list of students killed following last week’s massacre.

“We hope to know the identities of all the 142 students by today evening and hopefully release the list by tomorrow (Wednesday),” said the Cabinet secretary.

“The identification is manual using fingerprints. It is being conducted by the National Registration Bureau which is matching these prints to the government database.

“We not running DNA tests on the bodies as this will take another week,” he said.

In addition, the Ministry of Health, which is working with the Kenya Red Cross, has ordered for 142 coffins at a cost of Sh20,000 each for all the victims and pledged to cater for transport cost to their respective homes for burial.

“We will also provide Sh100,000 per deceased students to be paid tomorrow (Wednesday) through the Moi University,” said Mr Macharia.
