The Catholic Church Must Purify its Clergy: Ngugi
Catholic church

On the heels of the mess created by the former Archbishop of Washington, Theodore McCarrick, the local Catholic Church finds itself grappling to save face after scandalous revelations about a deviant and morally unacceptable culture at the St. John's Seminary in Brighton, Massachusetts.

There are those of us who remember when the members of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops converged in Dallas in 2002 to chart a way forward on purifying a reeling Church and came up with a system of reporting and investigating all allegations of abuse. The one flaw in the system however was that bishops were exempt and we see where that has led the Church!

The allegations against Bishop McCarrick as well as the scandal locally at St. John's are not easy things to discuss especially for Catholics, yet these abuses of power have scandalized all Catholics and led to a belief that the Church's hierarchy is tone deaf to the cries of the flock! The Church has a moral responsibility to stop scandalizing it's followers and to atone for its shortcomings, but this will not be achieved unless the Magisterial system purifies itself and implements a system that does not exempt or cover up for anyone.

If you are reading this and have not been scandalized enough, I present to you:PENNSYLVANIA! Where a recent grand jury report has left most people especially Catholics speechless, outraged and downright angry! If anyone thinks the scope of the Pennsylvania abuse scandal is greater than it was in Boston at the turn of the Century that is because this is true! I laud Pope Francis for speaking openly about this most recent scandal and for pointing out the possible reasons while offering solutions. That is the Catholic leader we need at every level within the magisterial hierarchy and even further into the laity in their different official and social interactions with those who are called to tend to the Lord's flock.

The Catholic Church has a unique responsibility in the World as she seeks to evangelize from Cape Town to Cape Cod and everywhere in between and beyond. The Church's evangelical Mission cannot be achieved without the right ecclesiastical troops leading the charge and heralding that the Church is committed to reclaim her tainted image and win back those Catholics she has lost over the years of inaction as well as earn the attention of the ones she seeks to convert and lead to Christ.

The above being said, I must point out that I proudly profess the faith as described in the Nicene Creed as "the one, holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church". I yearn for the return to the days when Catholicism meant adherence to these four marks attributed to the Church since the the First Council of Constantinople in A.D 381 which in my view form the most critical attestation of the Christian faith.
