WOBURN__A Kenyan man who just arrived in Boston with his wife only 3 months ago to visit his family died suddenly on the eve of Thanks giving holiday leaving family and friends in shock and disbelief.

Samuel MainaThanji (73) passed away Wednesday last week after several days in the ICU at the Boston Medical center after he developed back pains that required urgent surgery.

The late Thanji leaves behind his wife FridahMaina and daughter, Anne Wilson Ndiho of Woburn. He was the elder brother to Rev. Canon Fredrick Thanji, the retired former pastor of the All Saints Community church in Quincy and father in law to Rev. Canon Peter Gachathi, retired pastor of the St. Paul's Community church in Lawrence, MA.

The deceased also had several other siblings in Kenya as well as several nephews and nieces in Boston including Faith Mbugua, Paul Mbugua, Mercy Mbugua,Tito Mbugua and Anthony Kabuga.

According to family sources, the late Thanji arrived late August this year in great health for a brief vacation to recover from the shock of losing his other daughter and grandson around July this year. At the same time, tragedy had hit the family harder when his wife lost her own brother soon after their daughter's death.

Speaking to Ajabu Africa News, WilsonNdiho, son in law said that the family rushed the late Thanji to Boston Medical on Wednesday November 14 after he complained of severe back pain that persisted over several days without easing.

He was immediately admitted for a surgery that seemed to go well. However, on Friday night, there was a drastic turn of events as his condition suddenly deteriorated and was rushed he was admitted to the ICU.

"We visited him on Saturday and he informed us that the pain had subsided after the surgery and we were hoping to have him released to return back home the next day. Unfortunately, as soon as some of us left the hospital, were called on the phone to return back immediately as his condition had suddenly worsened," Ndiho said.

He added that the late Thanji was rushed back to the ICU for a second time and put on life support "Unfortunately he passed on around 3pm on Wednesday when doctors indicated that they had failed to reverse the problem."

The body of the late MainaThanji has been moved to the Morse Bayliss Funeral home in Lowell pending funeral arrangements.

Shocked family and friends have been meeting at the family's home in Woburn for prayers and funeral planning.

A memorial and fundraiser the transport the body back home for burial has been scheduled to take place this Sunday December 2 at the St. Paul's Community church in Lawrence located at 112 Andover starting 3 pm.

"When death strikes, we are never prepared for all the things the costs that come with it. I would like to take this opportunity to appeal to our community to come out and help with the fund raising, as has been our custom. This family needs both our prayers and support in order to help them repatriate the body back to Kenya for burial,"said Pastor Jamlick Wairimu of the Emmanuel Christian Church in Rhode Island as chairman of the funeral fundraising committee.

The late Maina Thanji hailed from Kimangu village Thika County in central Kenya but had moved to Githurai town near Nairobi at the time of his untimely death.
