The City of Newark in New Jersey Celebrates Kenya’s Independence in honor and style

Newark- Kenyans living in the U.S State of New Jersey were treated to a rare occasion by the Mayor of Newark City Ras J. Baraka on 13th December 2018 a day after Jamhuri Day in Kenya. The rare phenomenon involved flag raising of the Kenyan flag at the main offices of the Mayor in honor and to mark the Jamhuri (Kenya’s Independence) Day Celebrations.

The event was attended by Kenyans living in New Jersey and other Africans and African Americans, some traveled from the neighboring states of New York, Massachusetts, Delaware, Baltimore and Maryland.

The following individuals received certificates of recognition from the Mayor’s office for their outstanding contributions in the community; Rodah Anono, Mr. Zachary Moitui, Gloria McCarthy, Peter O. Olala, Patrick Kifolo and Silas Miroro

Splendor and Colour at the 55th Jamhuri Day in Kenya

The Kenyan President, Uhuru Kenyatta, for the first time presided over the ceremony in the Capital Nairobi in full military regalia. Local media reported. The symbolic dressing was in line with the presentation of presidential colours and honours to Kenya Army’s 17 Battalion troop. The last time this happened was 20years ago during retired President Daniel Moi tenure and the military unit of the moment was from the Kenya Air Force. The president also recognized several Kenyan leaders for their distinguished and outstanding services rendered to the nation in various capacities and responsibilities.

This is a rare occasion, it has never happened before, the Kenyan Community is well represented here, they are part of the economy of this state and United States as a Country but the recognition and Flag Raising has never happened here, not to my knowledge, we would like to be doing this kind of an event every year, not only to the Kenyan community here but also for other countries whose people live here” Dominic Tamin -International Leader said in a statement.

The event was chaired by Rodah Anono, Event MC Rodah Anono and Co-Mc Marcy Phillips.

Speech by Deputy Mayor Ugo Nwaokoro and Rev Louise Rountree-Scott representing the Mayor’s office also Barbara King President of African Commission in Newark was present.
