LOWELL, MA__A photo journalist with Ajabu Media and publisher of Ajabu Africa News based in Boston, has lost his father back home in Othaya town, Nyeri county, central Kenya.

The untimely death of Mzee Daniel Wabora Mathenge father to Moses Mathenge, a long time photo-journalist with Ajabu Africa, died just a few months short of his 90th birthday (estimate). This took place yesterday, a week after he was rushed to a local hospital before he was referred and admitted to Kenyatta National Hospital, following a short illness.

According to family sources, Wabora had lived in a relatively excellent health his entire life; he hardly ever visited a hospital until he recently complained of breathing problems. His demise came as a double tragedy to the Mathenge family for they recently lost their mother in-law, also in Kenya, after a long fight with colorectal Cancer.

"As you know, the loss of a parent is a very significant loss, for Mathenge and family, it has happened barely two months after he lost his mother-in-law", read a message posted to friends and well-wishers on WhatsApp.

Mzee Wabora leaves behind his beloved wife, Maria Njeri, and ten children, as well as many grand children and great-grand children.

The last born sister to Mathenge, Rose, is barely a week old since she arrived in Boston, only to receive the devastating news. "We didn't get to meet a lot over the last week as I was so busy preparing for this trip," she regretted.

"As a travel requirement, I had to stay away from the public after I did my Covid-19 travel testing at the Aga Khan Hospital in Nairobi," she clarified to Ajabu Media.

Mathenge, a father of three who has been actively involved in many civic and community building activities including news reporting, photography and more as a member of the Kenyan community in the Boston, region was stunned by the untimely death.

"This was a big shock. My father had hardly been to the hospital and never complained of any pain. We were completely taken by surprise at this sudden development," said Mathenge.

Among the first people to express their condolences was one, Sameul Mbugua also known as Big Mbugua, who reflected on how losing a loved one back in Kenya while abroad can be depressing. He cited how he lost his dad twenty years ago while abroad. "The worst bit is that as you plan to travel home, so many arrangements have gone wrong," said Mbugua.

Following the sudden death of Mzee Wabora, friends and family in the Lowell area where Mathenge live have formed a WhatsApp group for the purpose of raising funds to assist the members of the family to make an emergency travel to Kenya for the funeral of their beloved father, which is slated for next week.

Due to the unprecedented need to observe social distancing protocols by the CDC due to COVID-19, it was not possible to hold in-person prayers and memorial for the late.

"We urge friends and well-wishers out there to pray for the family and send their contributions to help our brother and family get home as soon as possible," said Tim Kihiko; a populous realtor in Lowell, who is one of the admins for the fundraising group.

Ajabu Media and all our readers send our heartfelt condolences to Moses Mathenge and his entire family. May his father R.I.P until we meet again.
