West Pokot County Deputy Governor Dr. Nicholas Atudonyang, who has reportedly been missing for four years, is back in the public limelight and was crowned a new Pokot leader at Amaya shrines in Baringo.

Dr. Atudonyang, a neurosurgeon practicing in the U.S, will be seeking to oust his current boss Prof. John Lonyangapuo on a KANU ticket.

Governor Lonyangapuo launched a new outfit, the Kenya United Party (KUP), that is to be his political vehicle for 2022.

“The people continue to support me, the people continue to feel and appreciate what I am doing for them, and they know that I continue to carry their aspirations with them,” said Dr. Atudonyang.

A reason the deputy governor says has seen him vie for the governor’s seat for West Pokot County despite criticism that he has been an absentee leader who soon after elections, left for the United States, where he practices as a neurosurgeon.

“You will see for yourself as we move to the elections that majority of the people will give me the mandate to be the governor this time, not just the deputy governor,” he said.

Dr. Atudonyang, who will be vying on a KANU ticket, lashed out at his boss, Governor Lonyangapuo for failing to unite the people of West Pokot; leaders present during the crowning ceremony sharing the same sentiments.

“The governor saw it fit to isolate the people of West Pokot from the rest of Kenya by forming a small tribal party, but the people of West Pokot seem to be smarter than the governor himself,” he said.

West Pokot Senator Samuel Poghision, on his part, stated: “You could not work with Lonyangapuo; he started messing, misbehaving and mismanaging resources of the county. We have so many issues, he doesn’t take advice from anybody.”

Prof. Lonyangapuo previously defended his deputy's decision to work for the county while based in the U.S, to the extent of appearing at the Senate and before the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), to defend himself for allowing his principal assistant to work and live in the U.S, saying his deputy was helping the county in sourcing for health equipment.

The governor in 2019 told the Senate that: “After the equipment arrived, he prolonged his stay, so I told him now we can no longer have any reason to explain to anybody in West Pokot why you should continue being paid. Then he said his salary should be terminated.”

However, this was before Prof. Lonyangapuo's patience ran out in June 2020.

He surprisingly accused Dr. Atudonyang of working with some political leaders from the county to undermine his administration from his base in the U.S.

The two will face off in forthcoming gubernatorial race for West Pokot County.
