Kampala Woman MP Nabillah Naggayi Sempala was also arrested and locked away.

Nabillah was held at Kira Road Police station together with FDC presidential candidate, Kizza Besigye.

The presidential candidate who has been arrested several times before, has now been moved out of Kira road police station and driven to Kasangati.

Besigye was arrested along Jinja road in Kampala.

Police led by Kampala Central Police Station DPC Aaron Baguma, had blocked Dr Besigye from using Kampala Road to access the Central Business District.

Besigye campaigns in Kamwokya, a city suburb

Besigye was also expected to go to Nasser road, Nakasero and later hold rallies in Nansana, a few kilometres outside the city.

His supporters tried to battle police amid teargas and bullets but were overpowered.

Besigye who was in the company of his lawyer, Erias Lukwago, earlier campaigned in a city suburb, Kamwokya.

At the mini-rally, he said the absence of war was not an issue but that the welfare of the people was paramount.

He cited food, housing and poor hygiene experienced by the slums.

At the same rally, he declared Naggayi as FDC's flag bearer for Kampala Woman MP seat.

Military deploys as riots boil

Meanwhile, a protest is looming at Kisekka market, the most volatile spot in the city.

Traders closed their shops and hid inside their houses.

Residents were seen peeping through half-open doors and windows as security personnel patrol the area.

Police and military have deployed and taken over the market, surrounding premises and the entire city.

More military policemen were seen around City Square where tensions are mounting steadily.

They were also seen chasing and beating up civilians near Mapeera Building at the city centre.

Policemen threw a reasonable number of teargas canisters to scare away possible protesters.

Military police has now sealed off and is patrolling the entire stretch of Kampala road from the Constitutional Square to Watoto Church.
