Former First Lady Mama Ngina Kenyatta has been recognised for the role she played in the establishment of the first East African Community.

The East African Legislative Assembly (Eala) has honoured Mama Ngina alongside other first ladies at the time of East Africa's independence.

Mama Miriam Obote (Uganda) and Mama Maria Nyerere (Tanzania) were also feted for their contribution towards the formation of the first regional bloc.

Consequently, Mama Ngina and her two counterparts from Uganda and Tanzania will address a special Eala sitting in Arusha on Tuesday, May 31.

The special sitting is held under the umbrella of the 6th meeting of the Assembly's fourth session that began on May 23 and will end on June 3.

The meeting witnessed the presentation of the 2016/2017 EAC Budget amounting to $100 million (Ksh10 billion) on May 26.

The budget gives priority to the full implementation of the region's single customs territory and the EAC common market protocol.

The East African region's founding fathers, Mzee Jomo Kenyatta (Kenya), Julius Nyerere (Tanzania), and Milton Obote (Uganda), steered the first East African regional bloc.

This was for the period running through its inception in 1967 until its collapse in 1977.

Mama Ngina has received many other distinguished awards.

Last year, the "Living Legends" award was conferred on the country's founding first lady by the African Women of Excellence Awards scheme.

This was sponsored and hosted by the Diaspora African Forum Foundation, a Washington DC-based non-profit organisation.

She was recognised as an African icon, alongside 15 other women, for her contribution to Kenya's freedom struggle.

Mama Ngina has also received an honorary doctorate degree in Entrepreneurship from the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology.
