Reasons for the widespread school fires that have seen officials play the blame game are yet to be established.

Arson attacks have been reported in at least 100 schools across the country so far and have resulted in court appearances for students and the suspension of teachers.

Some who have accused students say exam fever has caught on but Knut secretary general Wilson Sossion said he had warned that radical reforms but Education CS Fred Matiang'i would result in the return of strikes.

Some schools have been shut following the destruction of property worth millions of shillings but some administrators have stayed put.

Sossion asked the government to take action before what he termed "ugly confrontations and repercussions". He said there is a disconnect between the prefect system and the administration.

The secretary general defended teachers saying the problem lies with the Education ministry, which he said made mistakes in the push for reforms to curb cheating in exams.

Sossion asked Matiang'i to stop blaming teachers as the claims are baseless. He added that he will not allow teachers to continue suffering until August 12 when schools are to be closed.
