Nursing
At the end of 2018 Gov. Charlie Baker certified a raise of 5.93 percent for the 200 members of the House and Senate for the 2019 and 2020 session. While I have no problem with the pay increase, especially since it is justified using data from the United States Census Bureau regarding median household income. I take no issue with their raise but with General Court's unwillingness to adjust the annual factor for nursing home allowable costs. The current law provides for nursing home reimbursements at 2017 rates and for those who are not aware, we are well into 2019! In the one hundred and ninety first session of the Massachusetts General Court ( 2019 - 2020) a petition has been filed by Sen Harriette Chandler, Thomas Golden Jr. And others seeking legislation to stabilize the Commonwealth's nursing Facilities. I must point out that this is not the first or second time similar bills have been filed but never saw the light of day. It is sad that the nursing facilities across the State have to wait in vain for legislators to approve a practical and common sense funding system that takes care of both the over 300,000 residents and their caregivers. As Senate bill number 352 languishes in the legislative process unsure of its fate just as Senate Bill number 336 of 2017 - 2018 which died a natural death, it is real ‘classy’ to force caregivers to leave their posts to come to the State House on May 21 during what has become an annual advocacy day. It is worth noting that the caregivers being short changed by the State are taking care of the ‘greatest generation’ and making daily adjustments in preparation for the baby boomers who are set to test the system like it has never been tested before. There is a serious shortage of caregivers and this is only going to get worse. The legislators may tout a balanced budget, but when it is done by shortchanging the most vulnerable, it is inhumane and demonstrates misplaced priorities. The elderly and their care must be a priority to all and not just to the caregivers. The State must demonstrate that it is willing to support, stabilize and fund the industry, not just regulate it without providing the financial oversight and safety nets needed to ensure the highest quality of care this side of the Sun.

Patriots Pounce Early, hold on to down Chiefs in Overtime Thriller! Kansas City, Missouri The New England Patriots are Super Bowl bound for the 9th time in 19 years after their 37 -31 overtime win over the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC Championship Game played at the Arrowhead stadium on Sunday night. The Patriots entered the game as the underdogs but showed their championship pedigree and that contrary to recent expert opinion they are more than capable of winning on the road even against the number one offense in the league. New England got off to a fast start in the first half of the game when they took a 14 - 0 lead thanks to a masterful offense, tactful special teams and impenetrable defense. The players illustrated why they had embraced the underdog role all week and now sought to prove that they did not travel to the Midwest as mere participants at the coronation ceremony of Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs. Patriots Quarterback Tom Brady, playing in his 13th AFC championship game proved why he is the greatest of all time to play his position with his purposeful approach and execution under center and improved to 11-0 against first time playoff quarterbacks, a feat no other quarterback has achieved. The newly crowned and defending AFC Champions have advanced to the Superbowl and will now face the Los Angeles Rams who defeated the New Orleans Saints earlier in the day to earn their ticket to Superbowl LIII to be played at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia on Sunday, February 3rd 2019. If Brady and the Patriots beat the Rams at Super Bowl LIII, Brady would become the only player in NFL history to win six Super Bowl titles. He is currently tied with Charles Haley (49ers, Cowboys), as well as, 14 other Super Bowl records. Among other notable marks on his record, the 41-year-old Brady is the all-time leader in Super Bowl passing yards (2,576), completions (235), touchdown passes (18) and starts (8) by a quarterback. Superbowl LIII will be here before we know it. it is therefore time to rest up and prepare for what promises to be a battle of 2 offensive powerhouses battling for top honors at the pinnacle of the National Football League. The Patriots have been there and done that and they will enter Superbowl bowl 53 as favorites. It will be fun to watch to see if they can bring a second title to Titletown, USA on the heels of the Boston Red Sox winning the World Series trophy last October.

Chemirmir
As news of Billy Chemirmir's litany of charges including several murders and attempted murders continue to rattle the local communities and the nation, I find it imperative to note that Billy is not a representative of every home healthcare worker. Mr. Chemirmir's alleged actions put a damper on the hard work performed by many in the service of the nation's most vulnerable adults and should be condemned with the strongest terms. Furthermore, once tried and convicted he deserves the most severe punishment allowed by law. As attested by the charge sheet Most if not all of Chemirmir's victims are elderly women, he also appears to have had an appetite for their jewellery boxes and other valuables. He is said to have given some to his wife and treasure others in his house. When law enforcement finally tailed him and arrested him, a search warrant was issued and in his ransacked house the police confiscated a huge cache of valuables suspected to have been stolen from his deceased victims and other homes he had worked. What is further heart breaking is the fact that Billy used his credentials as a trusted caregiver to inflict pain and suffering to his vulnerable victims and their families. It is natural that his arrest and subsequent arraignment on these most shocking and despicable allegations coupled with the ensuing media publicity puts Kenyans and other immigrants , most of whom are in the healthcare industry in an uneasy situation. Billy's crimes are inhumane to say the least and indefensible. He was his own person, he is not a representative of the many men and women in his same position as healthcare providers who protect and defend their vulnerable patients every day. I am confident the Texas judicial system will provide justice for his victims and their families. Once convicted he should not see the light of day again! Six days to the day ( May 7th), Liverpool were left for dead following a 3 - 0 drubbing at the hands of F.C Barcelona and Lionel Messi in Spain. Fast forward to kick off Tuesday, May 7th for the return leg of the UEFA Champions League semi final and the odds were against the English side given the fact that the Spanish Giants had a 3 goal advantage and the Jurgen Kloop's boys would need to score atleast 4 unanswered goals to advance to the June 1st final. Many fair weather fans (read United fans) and bookmakers doubted Liverpool's chances but Divoc Origi (the son of former Kenyan professional footballer, Mike Okoth Origi) and Georginio Wijnaldum consolidated an English side reeling from the absence of Egyptian striker, Mohammed Salah to contain the likes of Phillipe Coutinho and Luis Suarez (both former Liverpool players) as well football great Lionel Messi. Liverpool's win means that they will now face Victor Wanyama's Tottenham Hotspur who stunned Ajax with a 3- 2 onthe road on Wednesday. The final, will be the first all English final since 2008 when Chelsea played and lost to Manchester United in Moscow. The game will be played at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium in Madrid, Spain on Saturday June 1st 2019.

MEDIA
In the event of public need, media houses play a critical role either in disseminating crucial information about the needs as well as critical information to keep all informed and on the same page. I bear no illusion that with technological advances, there exists a growing trend that pits responsible journalism against irresponsible and sensational journalism, deriding the fourth estate's stake at what is their rightful place in society. I understand the dangers of irresponsible journalism, but that does not trade off the rights of responsible journalists who I agree must join the fight against the bad moles in their profession. The above being stated and with the advent of fake news infiltrating the social media scene posing as mainstream media with something to bring to the table, the society has a duty to sit back and allow responsible journalists to do their jobs. Responsible journalists whether local or international are bound by ethical standards which demand due diligence in their research, investigative work and reporting. There is no room to allow personal vendetta to cloud their work as this makes them subjects of their work. The community on the other hand must allow journalists to be journalists just as we allow the clergy to be clergy, teachers to be the same and the list is endless. News reporters when following the strict protocol that demands due diligence do not need the mandate of the consumers to write or report a story. It is therefore an unfair double standard for members of the community to seek to curtail the service rendered by media houses to the community when it supposedly serves them. It is hypocritical to hide behind the privacy veil on one occasion and seek out the same media houses to propagate community needs and causes on another. Each media house worth its salt must have an editorial board which acts as a safety net by weighing all news contents and opinions before going to press to ensure that they are fit to print. This, ladies and gentlemen represents what responsible journalism is all about. The fourth estate is here to stay as it works to hold the community accountable when needed be it by keeping its leaders honest or calling for a collaborative approach to common problems. It is the media's responsibility to hold errant leaders' feet to the fire, propagate news that inform and educate the public all without fear or favor. Let us remember that even the best systems if not checked can turn draconian. Responsible journalists therefore have a duty to serve in public interest and not just when the news reporting is a comfortable subject, but even when it demands a little bit of cringing because through the lines especially in hard times, the community will find an avenue to explore common solutions to common problems.

IMPEACHMENT
As the nation watches on a 24 hour news cycle, claims and counterclaims on who orchestrated the 2016 presidential election meddling by a foreign power, in comes allegations of President Donald Trump's obstruction of justice and circumvention of national security protocol. I must point out that while there are many pundits and legal experts trying to explain and convince the masses one side or the other, what lacks is a better informed and engaged electorate beyond partisan politics and bickering. There is no civic engagement in the United States today which makes the ongoing impeachment inquiry sound like a conversation between aliens somewhere in an obscure part of the milky way. There are a few who understand the impeachment process and these are the ones who get frustrated at those who don't understand it. There is the political football being lobbed around by both sides which further murkies the details and derails opportunities for those seeking to have some sense of understanding and benefit from the engagement. I will therefore make a feeble attempt at explaining that the looming impeachment of the sitting president does not mean his removal from office. It is in fact just a formal process of outlining the charges levelled against him. It only takes a simple majority vote for House of representatives to approve the articles of impeachment and with the partisanship in American politics today, that is as good as given. The herculean task lies in the Senate whose members must hold a trial presided by the Chief Justice of the United States and then vote whether to remove the president from office or not. Currently the U.S. senate is Republican controlled making it very unlikely that a two thirds majority would be reached to convict and remove the president from office. It is worth noting throughout its existence, the US House of Representatives has impeached only 19 federal officers and only 2 of these were presidents. President Andrew Johnson in 1868 became the first president to be impeached and President Bill Clinton in 1998 became the second and last to be impeached via resolution 611 on grounds of perjury to a grand jury and obstruction of justice. Both men however were never convicted by the Senate and thus continued with their duties as President. That being said, it is very likely president Donald Trump will be impeached, but highly unlikely he will be removed from office. Those who think America deserves a better commander in chief will therefore have to campaign against and vote for an alternative candidate come November 2020. I can say with certainty that the old democratic process that has provided this constitutional republic with all its residents at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue since George Washington is the sure way to elect a new leader of the free world.

Regae
When the big ship docked at the Salisbury Beach without a commotion and on to the stage captain landed to a deafening applause from a mammoth crowd. These fans, a perfect collage of ethnicities, color, national origin and age had arrived at the Blue Ocean Music Hall at Salisbury Beach to party with legendary reggae icon Freddie Mc Gregor aka Di Captain. On this beautiful Sunday, the 2nd day of June Di Captain did not disappoint the near capacity audience that braved the inclement weather to drive to the sleepy seaside town of Salisbury Massachusetts for the concert. It was at the peak of his stage performance that the drums, guitars, saxophones and all the accompaniment went silent, and in the rebarbative silence that ensued,The Jah man, personally singled out, and acknowledged the exceptional presence, of members of a particular nationality amongst the wild crowd, Kenyans. The simple act of recognizing Kenyans not only made those in attendance feel irie but also gave them a formal sense of belonging. It was like a kite ushering in an even greater applause for his remaining songs for the night. It left 'em feelin' irie like a kite' To return the favor, there were Some scattered sounds of ululation, a unique sound produced by central Kenya women in recognition of a special child, which were ultimately drowned by the more urban raucous shouts of joy. Nevertheless they made their presence known! In his mid show special dedication, Mr. Mc Gregor narrated how he was pessimistic of his popularity in Kenya, until his iconic performance at the KICC Comesa grounds early March of last year. “What I did not know is that, my songs were so popular in Kenya. And the Kenyan people asked me to sing a song, and I was kind of surprised I haven’t done that song in a long time …. . But tonight, I gonna do it for all my Kenyan friends here and I will get back to …. . And if you know the song just sing along with me. Goes like this ...” Freddie called on his fans to sing along with him the song “I Wish There Was A Way” as a special dedication to honor Kenyans, citing that it was the song that was highly requested for, while in Nairobi Kenya. (Oh, I wish, I wish there was a way that I could read your mind And I know just the way to make that sacrifice), the song continues. The show was unique and fan friendly as Freddie was available and mingled with his adoring fans Contrary to other celebrities who at times are not available to their fans after a concert concludes. He set aside his celebrity status and stepped straight downstage to take photos with his fans. The photo op turned out to be of great demand among Kenyans who trailed and scrambled to take a proud photo with him. In my previous interview with the ‘born winner”, he was preparing for an African tour that culminated in Nairobi and marked by releasing a song in praise of the Kenya’s founding father the late Mzee Jommo Kenyata. The extended tour which would have taken him to West Africa was later canceled under an abundance of caution due to an Ebola outbreak and the all too familiar political upheavals that rocked Kenya around the last Presidential electioneering period. The public confession for his affection to Kenya and its people isn’t the 1st among music artists of Jamaican origin. Alaine Laughton has been pitching camp in Kenya and released a love song ‘wafula’. She fondly refers to Kenya as her second home, to the correction of her fans that, “Kenya isn't your second home it's your home Jamaica happened to adopt you from us by mistake” according to one of her twitter posts. Recently some members of the Reggae Royalty the Morgan Heritage are said to have appealed for Kenyan citizenship from the President of the Republic of Kenya, President Uhuru Kenyatta. They are said to have expressed interest in making Kenya their retirement home and want to start investing. Perhaps the most joyous of all the fans was one George Njane who on his maiden night in America met face to with the reggae icon having missed the Kenyan show when it sold out. “What a great day, I just landed in America last night from Kenya and guess what, on my second day I attend a concert by Freddie by the ocean view”. He added that there is no greater aeration in levity than “ having the privilege to chat one on one plus a photo with him Di Captain” Same case applied to Sammy Ndungu an all time reggae addict who had to tweak his itinerary from Athens, Ohio to attend the concert while on a visit to Boston. “I have never seen an ocean since I landed in America feeling” he said “ sharing the same breeze with Freddie is just like sharing a communion brethren” he added. Unknown and oblivious to the Jamaicans who are the bona fide proprietors of reggae especially the Roots & Radics, Reggae is arguably the most popular genre of music in Kenya with clubs and radio stations dedicated to the same. Literally, every reggae star in Jamaica today has a following in Kenya, among them President Uhuru Kenyatta, who once publicly confessed on having been stuck at a particular age of reggae music. Some street vendors earn a living hawking reggae music to pedestrians and commuters, while the mushrooming African gospel artistes largely rely on reggae beats.

Bruins stanley Cup
The Boston Bruins turned in a "total team" effort on Sunday and turned an elimination game into an ass whooping for the St. Louis Blues in Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Final. The Bruins won 5 - 1 behind goals from Chara, Carlo, Marchand, Kuhlman and Pastrnak. The Black and Gold are now one game away from capturing the Stanley Cup, they last won in 2011 and complete a remarkable season for New England teams which will see 3 out of 4 of their Major sports teams win a championship. This feat has not been achieved since the 1930s when 3 out of 4 Detroit teams did it. Game 7 will now be played at Boston's TD Garden on Wednesday at 8pm and with the series tied at 3 a piece, we expect fireworks and a home crowd baying for blood especially after a controversial win by St Louis in game 5. Go go Black and Gold…..

new year 2019
The celebrations marking the birth of Christ have come to an end and in reality, a new year lurks ahead promising new chapters and even challenges in life. In the quest for counsel and words of wisdom, I stumbled on an older friend and father figure who calmly reminded me that any storms ahead will come to push us to better mountains. In anticipation of the new year, yes that aforementioned trip around the Sun, our hopes and dreams will be laid bare in some mad rush to make resolutions. It is in this spirit that I write today: Resolutions do not matter if we are not resolute in our plans and firm in our beliefs. The new year is guaranteed to bring personal challenges, as well as, challenges to the World order. It is up to we, as a people individually and collectively to muster up energies and plans to get past these challenges. In the run up to the final hours of 2018, I am urging all and sundry to remember those who steered us towards the right paths in the past year, let us find the time to thank them and remind them that we will be there at their moment of need in the coming year. Then there will be those who had arguably the worst year of their lives, who will need a little reassurance that, the new year is the opening of a new chapter, let us find time to be that voice that will calm their stormy hearts. The year 2018 had its fair share of uncertainties and trying moments to our community. We do not know what could be a shrewd 2019 has in store, but with the right amount of faith, hope, plans and a resolute approach to the same, we will be sure to walk into the new year ready to embrace the positives and ride any turbulent storms to better mountains. My prayer in the new year is a mass embrace to being one another's keeper and less drive for individual ascent to the pinnacle of life regardless of the means. There are many among us who need that helping hand, that comforting phone call or text message. There are many who need to just hear that someone understands and cares. I am looking forward to a more united way of getting to the top of the mountain. One that emphasizes not in what we say but what we say and do. Let us not just wear that shirt that says: I care, let us live the message into the new year, the 365 days, 5 hours, 59 minutes and 16 seconds the Earth revolves around the sun and beyond. Happy New Year sisters and brothers.

WEDDING ETIQUETTE
It is well past mid Summer and some wedding bells have come and gone while many are still forthcoming. If you are privileged enough, and yes we say privileged to be invited to a friend's or even a family member's wedding, here a few things to help you navigate what can be at times a complex and even awkward social issue. Wedding etiquette has evolved over time and is influenced by time, place and culture. There are many questions and uncertainties that come into play but there are some definites that come into play. It is these definites that we use to provide today's crash course: Wedding etiquette 101 On RSVPs: Do: Respond as soon as you receive the Invitation; any and all delays makes planning difficult for the hosts. Don’t: Ask to bring a guest. If a 'plus one' is not on the invitation, you are being invited alone. On dress codes Do: Follow the dress code when indicated but feel free to add your personal style. Don’t: Wear white or anything that could steal the bride's thunder. This is her day, period! On bringing your children: Do: Confirm if they are able to join (when invited) and if they have any dietary needs. Don’t: Assume. If your kids aren’t listed on the invite they are probably not invited and you should check in with the hosts if you have questions. On timing Do: Arrive on time! Preferably at least a half an hour before the start time indicated on the invitation. Don’t: Show up half-way through the ceremony and walk right in( you know, like it is your grandmother's house) . If you must, quietly make your way to the very back of the room instead of trying to find where your family or friends are sitting to join them. On Photography & Social Media Do: Be respectful of what you post. Not every bride and groom wants to publicize their wedding on social media, or sometimes they like to be the first to get it out there! Unless you work for the Washington Post, don't be a third rate photojournalist! Don’t: Do not block, obstruct or hinder the professional photo and videographers who are probably doing a better job than you. Respect the sanctity of the venue, especially in places of worship. On Speeches Do: Address the couple—not just one or the other. Also, thank them for being gracious hosts. Don’t: Speak too long. ( it is not the State of the Union address) 2 – 3 minutes is the perfect time for toasts! This keeps peoples’ attention and keeps pace with the program! On Drinking Do: Drink and have a wonderful time but maybe avoid mixing different types of alcohol, even if it is an open bar. The price could be hefty in the morning, hangover -speaking! Don’t: Get so drunk that you might embarrass yourself or the couple, remember these are memories that last a lifetime. If you have food allergies & preferences Do: Let the wedding planner or hosts know ahead of time. Don’t: Wait until the wedding for very specific requests. Remember just because you don't like carrots does not mean the entire wedding menu should be overhauled. When in doubt: Do: Reach out. Finding out from the couple is the best thing to do. Don’t: Assume. It’s always best to check with the hosts if you are unsure about anything and this is where event planners can be super helpful so no one is unnecessarily stressing the bride and groom. If you’re in the wedding party Do: Show up and on time to scheduled bridal party events. Don’t: Drink too much before the wedding begins…once all the scheduled events and toasts are out the way then it’s time to party! The least thoughtful things you can do: Show up late or bring uninvited guests. Get too adventurous on the dance floor and end up at the Massachusetts General Hospital The most thoughtful things you can do Help and be respectful to the elderly, family members and mind your own children ( if invited). Ship your gift, if you can so the couple doesn’t have to bring it home that night. Know the crowd. Weddings are always multi generational, do not dance inappropriately in a bid to prove you are man or woman! This day already has one of those: the married couple! Lastly, don't argue the invitation! If invited alone, it most likely is not an oversight! The couple has other friends and they are looking at the big picture! It is their day, they choose who to invite, if your spouse, child, uncle or visiting second cousin from Albuquerque, New Mexico is not invited, well they will have to sit this one out, there will always be others!

RESILIENCE
January 15th, 2019 marks another day that will live in infamy as its counterpart 3 years prior. On this day, a herd of cowards sought stormed upon a peaceful people going about their daily routines and unleashed mayhem and terror at the DusitD2 Hotel complex in Nairobi, Kenya. The dust has since settled and now begins the painful process of burying our dead, consoling the injured and condoling the bereaved. The securing of evidence by law enforcement and following leads which may identify other suspects or masterminds is well underway but what is crucial is here is that the attack however ugly, the ensuing frantic and frenetic chaos as well as the economic losses will not deter a resillient nation from picking up the pieces and rising again. The attack was definitely a part of an ongoing campaign by Al-Shabbab millitants to intimidate and prove a point by inflicting pain on innocent people who have no dog in their fight with the Western World. The cowardly response while claimning responsibility illustrates this shallow and pervasive way of thinking. While any 10 year old with a good Civics lesson, would understand that Kenya does not dictate United States foreign policy, these cowards chose to respond to their percieved misgivings with an attack on the innocent for what they termed as the witless remarks of U.S. president, Donald Trump, and his declaration of Al-Quds [Jerusalem] as the capital of Israel.” Today as the nation reels, we must remain vigilant and resolute against these acts of babrbarism in the name of religion. I must point out that these cowards do not represent Islam because these acts are infact forbidden by the same religion who name they use to launch their pernicious and shameless evils. Kenya has a right to defend herself from this third rate tyrants and we must be right every time, because they only need to be right once. The best antidote to fight these evils is resilience and a relentless offense against them in their hideouts and I am confident the same courage the 4 million people in Nairobi showed by going about their businesses hours after the situation was contained by law enforcement will carry on. A united Kenya and her allies will never be defeated by these agents of terror. We are better than they are and these violent exremists must be countered at every angle. In the meantime, let us pay our respects to those who lost their lives, say a prayer for those still in recovery and then flex our military might.

Vatican
On the eve of an unprecedented Clergy abuse Summit, the Roman Catholic Church is continuing to do what it has perfected over the years: owning its complicity in the Sex abuse scandals engulfing it in bits and pieces! First, His holiness Pope Francis creates headlines and ruffles feathers when he acknowledges abuse by priests where nuns are the victims. He furthers what he also does best by mentioning what we know ( only if you do your homework) as the dissolution of a French based order of St. Jean by his predecessor, Pope Benedict for engaging in pervasive activities and borderline “sexual slavery” - his words, not mine! Secondly, the Pope just defrocked former cardinal Theodore McCarrick whose scandals rocked the American Church and left many unanswered questions on how he ascended to his position given his scandals were well documented. What took so long? Is pope Francis cruising for a pyrrhic victory? The upcoming Summit will solely focus on the abuse of children and rightly so, but while I can argue it is 1700 years too late, I wonder whether the Church based on its history has the willingness to act on any of its expected resolutions. I will accept to be a card carrying pessimist on this one because I have a myriad of reasons not to believe anything tangible will come out of this. Rome is burning and the scandals are fanning the fire. There is little to no desire within the magisterium to reform the Church's handling of its most dangerous crisis since the Protestant Reformation which ended in 1648. It is not its inability I say, but rather the lack of ‘political will’ and selfishness among the upper echelon of the Church. The questions are numerous and the answers are scant, if any. The daily reports for any Catholics who care are reasons to doubt, to challenge, to pray and to demand that we be better! It is hard to believe what we hear, but we can continue burying our heads in the sand and expect the problems will go away, or we can be proactive and from our positions expect and ask for a better Catholic church. The upcoming Summit may be a step in the right direction, but that remains to be seen.

shutdown
The just concluded and longest government shutdown in US history captured and captivated many. While to the regular person, the shutdown was merely the result of Republicans and Democrats sticking their tongues out at each other, the truth is, it is much more complex and a part of an effective system of checks and balances. In a regular US Federal budget process, it is the responsibility of Congress to appropriate funding by September 30th to cover the following fiscal year. This of course does not happen all the time for a variety of reasons forcing Congress to enact what is called a continuing funding resolution. It is in the event of disagreements over the enactment of a continuing funding resolution that a shutdown will occur. A shutdown will occur because when Congress fails to appropriate the necessary funds, a lapse occurs and triggers the suspension of some non-essential discretionary services. While disagreements over funding may be political, a shutdown is actually not always a bad thing. It is an illustration of a functioning system that is constitutionally mandated to oversee government operations as well as provide oversight within its different branches. There are of course unpleasant outcomes and negative impacts to life for furloughed workers and those who due to the nature of their jobs have to work without pay. The big picture is however a system that may on rare occasions have negative impacts but in the long run provides for safety nets and an effective way of preventing any of the government branches from overstepping its boundaries. In essence I am saying; it may prevent one good thing from happening but at the same time block many bad things. Have an executive day, won't you?

Graft
Every so often, the Kenyan government comes up with some elaborate anti graft campaign aimed at curtailing what I will term as the relentless accumulator. The politician or government official who believes his or her primary purpose in office is to enrich themselves while of course doing very little if anything to serve the people. The culprits are well known and as in recent cases there have been high ranking officials implicated in controversial deals. The contest in Kenya remains the same: the ones at the top say will continue to pursue those who engage in these shameful acts while those directly below them are the chief architects and ultimate beneficiaries. Politics and corruption I argue are two very different games and a corrupt politician is cancerous to any society. The war on graft when led by those who are the beneficiaries then becomes an endless cycle because you cannot count on the perpetrators to fight themselves. The war on graft and the negotiations on how to fight it has taken center stage from the United Nations to the G20, yet corruption remains as rampant as ever and what is worse it is committed by frequent offenders who have been put incharge of public coffers. There is a serious lack of commitment in the fight as the government officials have not only lost credibility but also are clearly not interested in negating their bottomline. Private companies on the other hand have found a haven in the country because they can freely undermine laws and best practices at the behest of political and government leaders. Kenya therefore lacks the moral and political will to fight corruption and what you hear from the government is just enough fodder to keep you occupied in the pen as they raid the silos! The fish stinks from the head down and any meaningful change must start by just not naming and shaming but also holding our leaders whose names appear in these lists of shame to account. We need an executive branch willing to play ball, an independent Judiciary equal to the task and a legislative branch full of members in it for the service and never for personal gain. To all Kenyans:Let us not just wear this anti graft shirt, let us live it!

Integrity
Honesty, probity, rectitude, honor, good character, principle(s), ethics, righteousness, nobility, right-mindedness, noble-mindedness, virtue, decency, fairness, scrupulousness, sincerity, truthfulness, trustworthiness...and the litany continues. All these words are synonymous with INTEGRITY! INTEGRITY, defined as following of one's moral and ethical compass which involves being truthful and doing the right thing even when nobody's watching. It is perhaps the single most crucial aspect driving businesses and other organizations. It demands honesty and nothing less in all situations. Integrity defines those who want to be considered professionals in a given profession, industry or even elected positions in government. The principles demanded must be adopted willingly and consistently even when the bottom line is threatened or political ground is lost. It is impossible to consider oneself virtuous, God-fearing and honest in social dealings, but then a complete opposite at the professional level! In business and even in social dealings, doing the right thing because it is the right thing to do defines one as a person of integrity. It may seem unprofitable in business and even unappealing to an electorate at first, but there is enough profitable pattern from the past to illustrate that a personal or corporate brand built on integrity eventually pays off. Unscrupulous dealings may lead to quick profits in business. Dishonesty may get you up further in the corporate and social ladders, but eventually these vices erode your brand and the achievements hinged on the same come crumbling down. In summation, it is important to note that the relationships we build today morph into the ties that bind us tomorrow which provide the safety nets that sustain humanity and form the bedrock of our legacy. Integrity is not an option, it must be a part of what gets us out of bed every God's day, yes integrity forms the bedrock of human decency. Ngugi Simon

Champions League
The boys have finally been separated from the men and the stage is set to determine which two European soccer teams will meet to decide this year's UEFA Club champions. In a battle of perennial English powerhouses, Manchester City saw their rivals Tottenham Hotspur snatch the last position at the final four table and a guaranteed 25 per cent chance to make the trip to Madrid for the June 1st Continental showcase. In an earlier match, Liverpool FC, punched their ticket to the semi finals following a drubbing of a hapless FC Porto who certainly had nothing to write home after the match. Liverpool now face an acid test when they meet FC Barcelona and one of the world's iconic players Lionel Messi. This will be a semi final, I predict whose winner will take top honors in Madrid on June 1st. Tottenham Hotspur will face AFC Ajax, one of the most successful European teams who have won the continental cup 4 times ( 3 times consecutively) in an effort to square off against either La Liga powerhouse, FC Barcelona or their EPL counterparts, Liverpool who hope not to walk alone! Tottenham will host AFC Ajax on April 30th as FC Barcelona hosts Liverpool FC with the return leg fixtures slated for May 7th. The winners of the semi finals will then square off at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium in Madrid, Spain on Saturday June 1st 2019.
